In Iqaluit, the team at Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre is working every day to improve food security, support skill-building, and create a stronger sense of community through shared meals, education, and better access to both traditional and healthy foods.
In March, we formalized our support through a new partnership agreement that will help expand their impact.
Qajuqturvik offers a range of programs that make a real difference:
- Daily Hot Meals: Served Monday to Friday, offering nourishment and connection in a welcoming space.
- Weekly Produce and Country Food Boxes: These boxes provide access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and locally sourced country food from hunters across Nunavut—distributed using a pay-what-you-can model that’s handled with care and discretion.
- Cooking Classes: Open to both children and adults, these classes teach practical skills, explore new cuisines, and promote healthy choices.
- Themed Dinners: In March, the centre hosted a series of African and Caribbean meals, wrapping up with a Moroccan-themed night led by a visiting chef.
- New Country Food and Bulk Store: Recently opened, the store offers staple dry goods and country food, again using the pay-what-you-can approach to keep food accessible to everyone.
As part of our April visit to Iqaluit, we had the chance to stop in at the new store and see the impact of this work firsthand. The team shared their plans to use our partnership to send local kitchen staff to the South for short training placements with experienced chefs—bringing back new skills and fresh ideas to support their growing programs.
We’re honoured to support Qajuqturvik’s work and their commitment to community-led solutions that prioritize access, dignity, and connection.
