Scholarships support giving new life to language

Language plays a vital role in a vibrant culture, and we’re providing scholarships to support the revival of Inuit languages in the North.

As an Inuit-owned organization, Canadian North has a mission to meaningfully improve the lives of our people, our customers and the communities we serve. As part of helping our communities flourish, we’ve been giving scholarships for 17 years to students who live in Nunavut or Northwest Territories.

For example, we’re working with Nunavut Arctic College and the University of Victoria to support students studying Inuktut. Programs focus on Inuit language and culture studies, interpretation and translation, and the revival of the languages.

We rely on the instructors, who know their students best, to identify the ones showing aptitude, commitment, resilience and strong leadership skills, as well as financial need. Their recommendations resulted in the latest scholarships going to Elizabeth Avingaq, Susan Ikakhik, Amanda Ningeocheak and Jade Paniloo from Nunavut Arctic College, and Miali Coley-Sudlovenick from the University of Victoria.

Congratulations, everyone! We can’t wait to celebrate your graduation.
