Helping Preserve Inuinnaqtun Through Innovation

Students from Helen Kalvak Elihakvik School in Ulukhaktok, NWT, are working alongside visiting BCIT students to help preserve Inuinnaqtun, an Indigenous language deeply rooted in their community.

Together, they’re developing a mobile app that uses AI to support translation and revitalization efforts.

Canadian North supported the travel of the BCIT students to Ulukhaktok, helping connect youth, technology, and tradition in a project that celebrates and protects Inuit culture.

During their visit, the BCIT team helped set up a local server and began training a large language model (a type of AI program that excels at understanding and generating human language) that will eventually support full-sentence translations and include voice recordings from community elders.

This inspiring collaboration aims to make Inuinnaqtun more accessible for future generations, and we’re excited to help make connections like this possible.
