Supporting Inuit Heritage in Gjoa Haven

Since opening its doors on October 17, 2013, the Nattilik Heritage Centre has served as a gathering place and cultural hub in Gjoa Haven.

Built to preserve and share the traditions of the Nattilik people, the Centre offers much more than exhibits. It is a space where artifacts are displayed to museum standards, where elders and artists demonstrate traditional arts and crafts, and where mentorship programs, heritage learning, and cultural events bring people together.

Through Ullulaq Inuit Arts, its retail gallery, the Centre also provides local and regional artists with a place to share their work and strengthen economic opportunities in the community.

This past June, the Centre celebrated the grand opening of its expansion. It is an important milestone in its role as a living place of culture.

We were honoured to support the occasion by providing certificates for community members to attend from across the Kitikmeot region. From Taloyoak, Kugaaruk, and Cambridge Bay, one youth and one elder from each community traveled to Gjoa Haven to take part in the celebrations. Their presence ensured that both the wisdom of experience and the voices of the next generation were represented at this special event.
