The Jig is Up: Iqaluit Cod Derby is One of Many Supported by Canadian North

The May long weekend saw a big turnout on the sea ice next to Iqaluit, as more than 800 people took part in the 2025 Cod Derby.

From early Friday through to Monday evening, families and fishers of all ages gathered along the Koojessee Inlet for a chance at cash, prizes and the thrill of the catch.

Twelve participants took home more than $26,000 in prize money, along with gear and merchandise from event sponsors. The top prize went to Davidee Kolola, whose 38.5 cm, 344.4-gram cod edged out another finalist by just 8.5 grams (about the weight of 8 thumbtacks). Kolola received $10,000 and a toboggan for his efforts, and Canadian North was pleased to provide some airline tickets to his haul.

The event welcomed participants across generations, from toddlers to Elders, and is a family-oriented gathering that continues to grow each year.

Across the bay at Nunngarut Lake, Ilitaqsiniq hosted a one-day Arctic char derby on that Saturday. Canadian North supported this event as well by donating flight certificates to help recognize community participation.

The support didn’t stop in Iqaluit. Just days earlier, Sanirajak held a local derby of its own, where Rebecca Kammuka reeled in the top prize of $10,000 from sponsors. Canadian North added a pair of airline tickets for the event. Organizers shared their appreciation for the airline’s support in making the event a success.

In Rankin Inlet, Canadian North provided certificates for two fishing events: the Trout Derby and the Cod Derby. Looking ahead, support has also been confirmed for the Pangnirtung Sculpin Derby scheduled for June 3.

Fishing derbies like these bring people together through time on the land, celebration of culture, and shared community pride. Canadian North is proud to continue supporting events that reflect the strength, connection, and traditions of the North.
