On the Button

What started three years ago as an idea to support the community has grown into a popular annual event with a big impact.

Curling for the Cause brings together local curlers, dart players, and community members for a day of fun and giving back.

Organized by Canadian North’s Wade Kingdon, in collaboration with the Iqaluit Curling Club and the Frobisher Racquet Club, the event blends curling and darts into a lighthearted one-day tournament. Teams play four ends of curling and compete in a best-of-five round of darts. And while participants are concentrating on their accuracy, the real focus is on helping others.

Each year, participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items as part of their entry. Shopping carts are wheeled into the venue and filled throughout the day, with all donations going to the Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre. This year, three full carts were collected, as more gets donated each year. The goal for next year: even more carts, and even more community participation.

The Canadian North banner proudly hung at the venue, and a few lucky players went home with door prizes to cap off the event. It’s a day that captures what community is all about: coming together, trying something new, and giving back in a way that’s fun and meaningful.
