FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, February 25, 2021 (Ottawa, ON) – Canadian North is pleased to announce the appointment of Madeleine Allakariallak to the newly created role of Director, Inuit Employment and Talent Strategies effective Monday, March 22, 2021. Allakariallak will be based in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and lead not only Canadian North’s Inuit employment, engagement, development, and retention programs, but also will lead talent development and learning programs for the organization overall.
“Accepting this new opportunity to engage and employ more Inuit for the airline that is wholly Inuit owned feels like an obvious step in the right direction. It aligns with my dream to see more Inuit and other Indigenous people take on more and higher level positions within our communities. I look forward to leading important initiatives that will help to engage and establish relationships both within and outside Canadian North,” said Madeleine Allakariallak.
Allakariallak will be joining Canadian North with widely respected experience in journalism, politics and economic development. She has spent a large portion of her career in the spotlight as a broadcaster for CBC North in Iqaluit, first as reporter and then host of Qulliq, CBC Nunavut’s flagship morning radio show. Allakariallak has also worked with APTN in Winnipeg, as host and producer for Contact, a national call-in program. Upon returning to Nunavut, Allakariallak worked in policy at Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the land claims organization representing Nunavut Inuit. She then served four years as Executive Assistant to former Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak. Most recently Allakariallak hosted Igalaaq, the only weekday Inuktitut news program in all of Canada on CBC TV.
“Having Madeleine Allakariallak join our team to lead development and employee talent programming means this will help carry out our mission – to meaningfully improve the lives of our people, our customers, and the communities we serve” said Chris Avery, President and CEO of Canadian North. On behalf of the Executive and Board at Canadian North, please help me welcome Madeleine as she will be out connecting with our many stakeholders in her new role.”
