Your Air Waybill

Completing an accurate Air Waybill (AWB) is the best way to ensure that your goods arrive at their destinations, when you expect them to arrive. It is your receipt and the instructions for shipping. Learn more about the agreement between yourself and the shipper in our Rates & Tariffs section.

The two fields that are most commonly left blank are:

SERVICE REQUIRED – This is where you choose how quickly your shipment arrives (Priority, Standard, or Economy (Service Products Available) or record that Specialized Care is required.

SIGNATURE – As an agreement between the shipper and Canadian North Cargo, this is very important.

Reading your Air Waybill

When you’re presented with a system-generated (printed) Air Waybill, you will may not recognize the abbreviated terms used by our Cargo team. If you’re curious, here’s what they mean.

Shipping Services

You may recognize these terms from Shipping Services and Shipping Everyday Goods. They tell the Cargo team what level of service the shipper has selected.

ECON = CN Economy – Reliable and economical, CN Economy is for shipments with less pressing timelines.

STND = CN Standard- These prompt delivery times are ideal for important (but not critical) shipments.

PRI = CN Priority- The fastest-moving selection ships critical goods in a hurry.

Shipping with Special Care

You may recognize these terms from our Shipping with Special Care section. To the customer, they reflect that these items have different shipping times and rates than Everyday Goods. To the Cargo team, these terms also tell them which additional care, security, documentation, and planning are required.

ENV = CN Envelope- When critical documents need to be shipped securely and quickly, these shipments move on the first departing flight.

TEMP = CN Temperature-Controlled- Goods, including perishable foods and plants, need to move quickly, be in temperature-controlled environments whenever possible, and receive special handling to ensure that quality is maintained.

PHAR = CN Pharma- Pharmaceutical goods need to move quickly and be in temperature-controlled environments whenever possible. Chain of Signature documentation and Proof of Delivery provide additional security and accountability.

SECR = CN Secure- Goods including carvings, tobacco, currency, cannabis, and other valuables require additional levels of security. Chain of Signature documentation, Proof of Delivery, and additional security personnel provide additional security and accountability. Learn more here.

CTRY Country Food = Personal Country Food- Like CN Temperature-Controlled, these perishable foods need to move quickly, be in temperature-controlled environments whenever possible, and receive special handling to ensure that quality is maintained. AVIH = CN Pets- Pets (live cargo) must move quickly and require special handling to ensure comfort and security at all times.

HUMR = CN Human Remains- Learn more about the special care provided for human remains here.

SPEC = Special / Oversized- Coordinated movements of large shipments require additional logistical considerations.

CON67 = 767 Container- Dedicated movement of large volumes or special items require confirmed timelines.

CON37 = 737 Container- Dedicated movement of large volumes or special items require confirmed timelines.

CHTR = Flight Charter- Dedicated movement of large volumes or special items which cannot be accommodated efficiently on our normal scheduled services require the tailored solutions provided by chartered flights.
